Honouring Remembrance Day with complimentary travel for veterans
BRITISH COLUMBIA – B.C.’s three major transportation agencies, BC Ferries, BC Transit and TransLink, are offering complimentary travel to veterans on Remembrance Day, Monday, November 11 to thank retired and active military personnel for their service.
BC Ferries will observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on the ships and terminals to honour the sacrifices made by veterans in the line of duty. BC Transit and TransLink encourage customers and staff to observe the traditional moment of silence at or near 11 a.m. across the system on November 11.
All Canadian flags on BC Ferries’ vessels and terminals will fly at half-mast on Remembrance Day. All buses will display “Lest We Forget” on the destination screen as will the scala screens of the ferries and terminals.
BC Ferries:
BC Ferries complimentary passenger fares will be provided for customers presenting official Canadian military identification or travelling in uniform. The company notes that these free fares are not applicable on the Inside Passage, Haida Gwaii and Central Coast Connector routes.
In addition, British Columbia’s seniors can also travel free on Remembrance Day with the presentation of a BC Services Card, BC Driver’s License, BC Identification Card or Birth Certificate.
Throughout the year, BC Ferries offers complimentary passenger travel to B.C. seniors from Monday through Thursday, except on provincial holidays. Remembrance Day, however, is excluded from that exception. For more travel tips and details, visit the BC Ferries Travel Tips page.
BC Transit:
All scheduled routes and handyDART services in the Victoria Regional Transit System will be free for all riders in uniform, active, retired and cadets, as well as those with Army, Navy or Air Force Association cards. Buses will also be running on a regular Sunday schedule on Remembrance Day.
TransLink:
TransLink is offering free transit on all services, including HandyDART, to veterans, active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, police and fire personnel, Canadian Coast Guard members, officers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and BC Ambulance Service personnel on Remembrance Day. Eligible customers should present their badge, military ID, Veteran’s Service card, or appear in uniform to receive free transit.
Veterans and other members are not required to tap their Compass Cards. One accessible fare gate will be left open at all SeaBus and SkyTrain stations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate. Eligible customers can take the bus without tapping all day. West Coast Express will not be in service as TransLink will operate on a Holiday service schedule on November 11.
The three transportation agencies hope this complimentary service will present veterans with convenient travel options to engage in Remembrance Day events in and around their region. Lest we forget.
