Essential infrastructure renewal program at Horseshoe Bay Terminal gets underway
WEST VANCOUVER, BC – As Horseshoe Bay terminal approaches its 65th anniversary, BC Ferries is undertaking a significant infrastructure renewal program to improve on-time performance, enhance the customer experience and ensure continued safe and reliable operations. Over the next several years, the terminal will undergo a series of essential improvements to upgrade aging infrastructure and improve operations, as well as address current and future demand for ferry service, driven by significant population growth along BC’s coast.
“Horseshoe Bay is one of our oldest and busiest terminals and, like many similar infrastructure projects from that era, many of its components are due to be replaced or upgraded,” said Stephen Jones, Vice President, Engineering. “This extensive work is another example of the growing number of significant capital investments necessary to keep our terminals and vessels in their best working condition to ensure they operate safely, reliably and efficiently as we keep millions of customers moving each year.”
Planned projects at the terminal include upgrading or replacing three berths, relocating the control tower, upgrading aging elevated structures, and enhancing seismic resiliency and operational efficiency. The total cost of renewal program at Horseshoe Bay terminal is expected to be in the hundreds of millions, with some projects, such as work on the elevated structures and control tower relocation, already in the planning stages. A dedicated team is in place to deliver these projects on time and on budget, ensuring cost-effective investments in the terminal’s future.
Improvements and new structures will be built to modern safety and seismic standards, strengthening the terminal’s overall resiliency. The enhancements will streamline traffic flow and increase berth flexibility, allowing the terminal to accommodate a broader range of vessels and operate more efficiently within the existing site constraints. The full scope of work is designed to facilitate smoother loading processes, support the seamless integration of the New Major Vessels to the BC Ferries’ fleet, and ultimately enhance the travel experience for customers.
“While much of this work will not be visible to start, we do expect there will be changes to how customers travel through the terminal as early as this fall. Minimizing any impacts on both our customers and staff as much as possible will continue to be a priority as planning for the projects continues,” said Melanie Lucia, Vice President, Customer Experience.
