MANDATORY RULES WHEN BRINGING HAY ONTO BC FERRIES

VICTORIA – BC Ferries is reminding customers that hay is a dangerous good when being transported on a vessel due to the fire risk it poses. The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act legally obligates customers transporting hay or straw to ensure the goods are safely and securely packaged and transported, and that they are identifiable through approved labelling.

The following steps must be taken when transporting hay on a BC Ferries vessel:
  • A Dangerous Goods Shipping Document is required for hay regardless of weight or number of bales.
  • Placards must be placed on the outside of the vehicle carrying the hay, if the total weight is 500 kg (1100 lb) or more.
  • Hay must be secured within a closed vehicle, or the load must be completely covered with tarps to prevent random ignition.
  • Loads that are wet, damp or contaminated cannot be transported on a vessel.

Dangerous goods regulations do not apply to unbaled or loose hay used for feed during transport or as bedding in a livestock transport unit. Drivers must declare all dangerous goods at the terminal ticket booth, through an attendant, or vessel officer.
