Fiscal 2023-2024

For more than six decades, BC Ferries has been serving customers, connecting communities, moving essential goods, supporting tourism and strengthening the economy.

From our early beginnings with just two vessels operating on a single route, today we have grown to be one of the largest and most complex ferry systems in the world, with 37 vessels supporting 25 routes along 1,600 kilometres of coastline.

During fiscal 2024, we transported more people, vehicles and goods than ever before – and those numbers continue to grow. As we look to the future, we are focused on creating a resilient, reliable and affordable ferry service.

As our passenger numbers continued to grow, we are continuing to invest in vessels and terminals to maintain high levels of service reliability. Last year, we gave the first look at what our new ferries could look like when they begin operations in 2029.

“The New Major Vessels program is the largest part of our capital plan to modernize and transform the ferry experience in British Columbia,” says our President & CEO Nicolas Jimenez. “The vessels – greener, more efficient and standardized – represent the future of ferry travel in our province.”

With greater vehicle capacity, the new vessels will help standardize our fleet and meet growing customer demand for year to come. They will also be designed to maximize efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Charting the Course

This year, we embarked on a comprehensive engagement process to shape our long-term strategy and develop our vision for the future. Charting the Course aimed to identify what’s needed to keep people, goods and services in coastal communities connected today and in years ahead.

Thanks to the nearly 9,400 surveys by the public and staff, and 9,000+ customer travel preference questionnaires, we are developing a long-term vision for ferry service and the strategic steps we need to take to get us there.

Further engagement will continue with other interest holders to support development of policy options, and the final vision is expected in early 2025.
